Gods

Apollo: god of prophecy and oracles, healing, plague and disease, music, song and poetry, archery, and the protection of the young

Ares: god of war, battlelust, civil order and manly courage

Dionysus: god of wine, vegetation, pleasure and festivity

Eros: the Protogenos (primordial deity) of procreation who emerged self-formed at the beginning of time. He was the driving force behind the generation of new life in the early cosmos. The Orphics knew him as Phanes, a primal being hatched from the world egg at creation. He was also equivalent to Thesis, "Creation," and Physis, "Nature

Hades: ( The king of the underworld and lord of the dead

Hephaestus: crippled god of fire, metalworking, stonemasonry and the art of sculpture

Hermes: God of animal husbandry, roads, travel, hospitality, heralds, diplomacy, trade, thievery, language, writing, persuasion, cunning wiles, athletic contests, gymnasiums, astronomy, and astrology

Poseidon: The King of the Sea, and the god of horses, rivers and earthquakes

Zeus: king of the gods, the god of sky and weather, law, order and fate

Goddesses

Aphrodite: goddess of love, beauty and intercourse

Artemis: goddess of hunting, wilderness and wild animals. She was also a goddess of childbirth, and the protectress of the girl child up to the age of marriage

Athena: goddess of wise counsel, war, the defense of towns, heroic endeavor, weaving, pottery and other crafts

Demeter: goddess of agriculture, grain, and bread, the prime sustenance of mankind

Hera: queen of the gods and the goddess of women and marriage. She was also a goddess of the sky and starry heavens

Hestia: goddess of the hearth (both private and municipal) and the home. As the goddess of the family hearth she also presided over the cooking of bread and the preparation of the family meal. Hestia was also the goddess of the sacrificial flame

Persephone: queen of the underworld, wife of the god Hades. She was also the goddess of spring growth

Medusa: She was one of the three sisters known as the Gorgons. The other two sisters were Sthenno and Euryale. Medusa was the only mortal out of the three. She was once very beautiful and lived far in the north were the sun didn't visit. Being very curious, she wanted to see the sun, and asked the Goddess Athena for permission to visit the south. Athena refused to allow her to visit. The medusa got angry and dared to say that Athena hadn't given her permission because she was jealous of her beauty. that was it! Athena was angered and punished her by turning her hair into snakes and cursing her by making her so ugly that who ever looks at her eyes would turn into stone. 

The Furies

 In Greek and Roman mythology, the Furies were female spirits of justice and vengeance. They were also called the Erinyes (angry ones). Known especially for pursuing people who had murdered family members, the Furies punished their victims by driving them mad. When not punishing wrongdoers on earth, they lived in the underworld and tortured the damned.

The Fates

They are: CLOTHO who spins the Thread of Life, LACHESIS who allots the length of the yarn, and ATROPOS who does the snip (the final one).

Now imagine they are all still alive today fighting a war that has been brewing for over six thousand years. Which are the working for the greater good of mankind? Which are trying to exploit mankind and control it ?

Think you know Greek Mythology?

Many of us as students took Greek mythology at one point.  Whether it was high school or college or perhaps even university.  The question is did you really pay attention? Many of us were too busy being teenagers to really give it a second thought. I happened to be one of those people. I found it interesting, but not interesting enough to really dig deep. The real problem was simple. Greek mythology is truly overwhelming!  There are so many stories, so many gods and goddesses it was hard trying to put it all together. Let's face it, most of us at that age really didn't care about things like that. Now some of the gods are just well known, but others maybe not so much.  Let's test your abilities here. I'm going to list several of the gods and goddesses, and without using Google or cheating how many do you think you could describe without first looking them up? Let's see shall we?

Here's where it gets tricky.... The number 3 is very, and I do mean VERY significant in Greek mythology.
Do you know why? Or why the number 3 is oddly repeated?

I did this post for several reasons. First and foremost, they are all characters in my book in one way shape or form, they're all mentioned. Second, because unlike my teenage years, I now know more about Greek mythology then I ever thought possible!  Have some fun!  Enjoy! I will post all the answers in a few days!

Life and other Things

Sometimes life get's in the way of what you love to do. Sometimes, you just get pulled in a million different directions. Well, I've been off for awhile but determined to get back on track this year! In the meantime I do other things to keep myself occupied. I read, and read some more. I decorate, and re-decorate! I love playing with different tablescapes depending on time of year and mood. When all that is said and done I write.  And writing is something I truly love!

I hope that one day I will be able to truly do all the things I love, just because...

Review for Lisa Forest “The Atlanteans: Oracle”

Recently, I received the privilege of reviewing the debut novel of author Lisa Forest. The debut novel, which goes by the title “The Atlanteans: Oracle” is the first book in Lisa Forest’s “The Atlanteans” series.  “Oracle” is a novel that follows main characters Bridget, Abby, Cole, Sarah, and Damon. Bridget is a descendent of the Mnestrean Line, a bloodline that has been protected throughout the ages by several of the Gods and Goddesses of ancient Greece. You heard me correctly. Cole, also known as Eros, and Sarah, also known as Athena, are two of these Gods. Without giving too much away, I can tell you that the novel takes a very unique approach to history, tying in both Greek Mythology with modern day in a way that I have never seen before.

When I cracked open this book for the first time, I honestly didn’t know what to expect. I knew that the story was going to revolve around the question “what if the Gods of Ancient Greece were alive today, and living among us as humans?” but little else. The novel grips you from the very first chapter, providing you with a quick prelude of things to come. It holds your interest from cover to cover, leaving you with an ending so gripping you can’t help, but shake in excitement and wish to immediately read the next one in the series. Sorry folks, but Lisa says it may be a year or more after this one is published before the next one comes out.

The story is solid, leaving very few, if any, cracks in the foundation and the dialogue, though it can seem a little too lovey dovey for my taste at times, it is realistic and fitting for the characters. The character development is as solid as the storyline. Oracle provides a remarkable cast of characters, delving deep into the personalities of each character and giving the reader a deep emotional connection with the members of the cast. We even get to see into the mind of the infamous Hades, which in my opinion was the most interesting part. You’ll understand when you read it.

The prose in the novel is nearly perfect with the author knowing which scenes need tons of details and which only need a few lines. Because of this it was hard for me to believe that this was Lisa Forest’s first novel, as most debut novels can be hit or miss in this area.

Other than the captivating scenes with Hades, I’d have to say that my favorite scenes were the battle scenes. Though all the scenes were remarkable, the battle scenes were by far the most cinematic. While I was reading these scenes, I could see it play out like an action-packed motion picture. It really took my breath away and made it nearly impossible to put down.

In conclusion, I will say that Lisa Forest’s debut novel “Atlanteans: Oracle,” is overall an amazing book. The one-of-a-kind plot, the dynamic characters, and the magnificently cinematic scenes make this book into a magnetic, captivating, and emotional thrill ride that will keep readers on the edge of their seats line after line, scene after scene, and chapter after chapter and will leave them begging for more. Two thumbs way up from this reviewer. Highly recommended.

Question of the Week: Go count the number of unread books sitting on your shelf. How many?

Unfortunately, I would hate to admit that there are more there then I would like to divulge.  The number roughly around 30ish. (ouch)  While in the midst of writing I find it impossible to read. I fear that I will be influenced by what I am reading.  I tend to still buy books and wait for the right opportunity to start reading them. I am  nearing the end of the first book now, so hopefully I will get the chance to read more regularly.  But, then again I am writing a trilogy so it may be awhile before I have the time to actually sit and read. Have been steadily keeping the pace and hoping that the (would be agent) I have been working with would remain interested.  Well on New Year's Eve he called to tell me his word for the New Year is "no"....except to me :)  I was beyond thrilled!  It's finally official, one of the biggest agent's in the business is  now MY agent!  He wants the book ready to take to the London book fair in April!!!  OMG!  I am now writing with a deadline!  Big dreams can come true if only you truly believe!!
